Air France KLM Cargo helps out on sustainable flight challenge

Air France KLM Martinair Cargo is supporting its partner airlines as they take part in the Sustainable Flight Challenge.

The challenge is organised by the SkyTeam Alliance and tasks member airlines and partner airlines with operating the most sustainable flight possible.

To help Air France and KLM, the cargo business will allocate 1% of cargo turnover from all Los Angeles International flights during the week of the challenge to the Gold Standard Foundation.

It will also optimise cargo load (high load and ideal weight & balance) and utilise hydro-treated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel for its European trucking network in the two days leading up to the challenge.

AFKLMP Cargo will also utilise electronic air waybills, electric transport in the warehouse and electric tractors to transport cargo to the aircraft, plus reduce weight by using lightweight nets, cardboard board cases, cardboard beams, lightweight unit load devices (ULD), and re-usable covers for cargo pallets.

The company will also conduct a pilot with recyclable cardboard pallets, instead of wooden ones, for freight transport. This initiative aims to save around 5-8 kgs per pallet.

Adriaan den Heijer, executive vice president Air France KLM Cargo and managing director Martinair, said: ā€œThe airfreight industry is a complex ecosystem involving many stakeholders. By uniting, we can catalyse, accelerate and transform the industry.

ā€œThrough the Sustainable Flight Challenge, we channel all of this positive energy towards a single shared goal: creating a more sustainable airfreight industry.ā€
